I think this is due to the small diameter of the core not being secured well enough and the core foam being torn up by the repeated impact of combat. So you know what and how I do it... I make the shields out of 1/8" High density plastic. The 1/8" alone will taco, but we use 2 strips of 3/8" high density plastic 2" wide vertically bolted to our shields and it almost completely stops the flex.
