Ok, this'll sound kinda out of nowhere, but I've been getting into learning some hip-hop dance, and reading about parkour makes me imagine putting parkour and breakdancing together. It would make a really killer video with some cool bouncy tune (or hardcore slash rap about your baby's mama. You know; whatev.)

These guys agree. And they kick ass! That's what I'm sayin'. Haha!

@Elysia: 1) Hip hop dancing is some of the coolest stuff ever.

2) "What do you get when you combine 6 hip hop dancers, 18 traceurs, some scaffolding and home-made vault boxes?

A killer show!

On Nov 20-23, members of NYPK teamed up with Nadia Lesy, Jennifer Weber and the badass ladies of award-winning hip-hop crew Decadance Theatre for four nights of riveting parkour/hip-hop collaboration."

I wish I could have been there.

Also, to everyone who's interested in learning and training, keep checking the following websites for updates:

www.americanparkour.com

--American Parkour is a community of traceurs and traceuses who come together to post videos and written articles of personal training, exercises, tutorials and general parkour experiences. You can find great stories about parkour experiences and read about the continuing growth of parkour as a serious activity. [For those of you who don't know, traceur refers to a practitioner of parkour and is the French word for "bullet." Traceuse is the feminine version]

www.parkourelements.com

--This is a recently created website dedicated to training for parkour. For the time being, most of the articles on the website can also be found on APK, but over time I'm sure it will become a valuable resource.

www.parkour.tv

--This website features an extensive collection of PK and freerunning videos. Some of them are good and some are bad. Some are freaking amazing, such as the video of Team Tempest that I posted. I was first introduced to parkour through videos. Watching these videos is to expanding your kinesthetic creativity as reading books expands your vocabulary. However, don't try to do all of it. Or even most of it. Some of these guys have years of prior training, and the stuff they do is likely to kill any of us.

Check these websites regularly and you'll be an informed part of the PK community in no time. The only thing to do then is get out there and practice!

Where can I located a cool gym like the ones these guys go to and have massive fun like they do?

Cuz I'd rather practice with large squishy things and then move onto brick walls.
Just a personal preference though...^_^;;

Actually, Vala, that's how it should be done, haha. It's much better to start practicing in a safer, controlled environment such as a gymnastics gym. The only one I know of around here is Gage, but I don't know how much they'd charge us to use their equipment. But I've got some relatively safe ideas that will help us determine what people can and can't do. I really wish I knew the exercise routine that they use in that European gym though.

I'd also like to point out that I'm in no way officially certified to teach parkour and freerunning skills and techniques, and that anyone who chooses to practice does so by his/her own volition. Parkour and freerunning are dangerous activities, and one should have a sound understanding of his/her abilities before attempting some of the maneuvers you'll see in the videos. The danger will also be increased by the heat levels we're likely to see during the summer, but if we're meeting for Dag practice, I suppose a bit of parkour wouldn't do too much harm. I can show you what little I know, but it's up to you to figure out what you can safely do and make sure not to try things you can't.

You can tell by my tendency to multi-post that I'm excited about the prospect of introducing people to parkour, haha. But I found an excellent article that discusses the obstacles people must face when they begin parkour.

http://www.americanparkour.com/content/view/3245/378/

Now that I think about it, parkour takes a lot of time and energy. I'd be glad to show people some stuff before practice, but it would probably be better to get together on days other than practices. I'd love to start a regular training routine with some people. It would probably involve doing a variety of exercises [basically going back to gym class, haha] multiple times a week. If we can't get together in groups to train, the exercises can still be done, but I know I don't usually have a lot of motivation to do them. I figured group training would help with that.

Yeap....I can see that by your multiposting instead of using the -edit- button. Razz Razz Razz

and I don't know, I have a hard time making practices as it is with my jobs. And now they want me to start working mornings too. *cries*
I need a different job...again....^_^;;

I like to make new posts instead of editing because I'm afraid people won't notice if I edit a post. Especially if it's an older one. But I figured you'd be really busy.

I'd love to really give parkour a shot if we were in a squishy, safe place.

I'd suggest doing as much of the APK warm-up as you can as often as possible before next summer. Once the warm-up becomes easy, move on to other exercises such as jump squats, jump tucks, plant plyos, and other various exercises. See the "Body" section of parkourelements.com for explanations of exercises.

-APK warm-up

http://www.parkourelements.com/body/

-PK Elements exercises

I heavily emphasize the warm-up, both as a regular exercise routine and a serious warm-up before training. I never did a good warm-up before any of my training, I just did some mild stretching. You can see where that got me :[
