I haven't had much experience with using a shield, but I know fighting against them with anything but a red, a flail, or another shield is a pain in the @$$. The Historical Swordsmanship Society refuses to use shields for reasons I don't entirely understand, but from what I do understand, they believe that shields aren't practical. On a quest for further knowledge and insight on this topic, I came across the following website, which I found interesting. It might give people ideas for making new shields, or it may just give you a little more understanding of how they were used by ancient warriors. Enjoy.

OMG!

We really do need a min weight on shields don't we? My goodness. Those were heavy! A roman tower= 22 pounds? Tower punch= 1 pound? Sad

I don't beleive that site to be accurate in the least. No offense Constantine.

I have handle ACTUAL historical museum peice shields. The Roman scutum was only 8lbs. Some steel re-enforced shields weighed 12lbs. I OWN a historic brass celtic shield (in storage) and it is only 4lbs.

But, that does not change my dislike of rediculasly anerexic shields.

I am not saying that there weren't shields that heavy. But, not the ones they claim. There was the Corta. But that was actually a shields with legs, and 4 handles. it was meant to be a movable wall for archers. But, they didn't last long on the field.

I think the Mongols had it better: make one where the angle is right and the animal hides are lax enough to catch all the arrows shot at archers.

I don't take any offense. I didn't create the site, haha. I wasn't making reference to the weight of the shields anyway, but to the idea that they were commonly used and in some ways integral to an army's most effective strategies. Unless you're saying that isn't accurate, in which case, my whole point is incorrect.
