I think most of the people on here have seen my note on Facebook, but for those who haven't and might be interested, I'm trying to get together a group of people to make a short film over the summer. Here's what I have so far [sorry for the use of our mundane names, but I didn't feel like changing them and some of the people don't do Dagorhir]:
Working Title
[Zombie-action-romance-comedy movie]
Production date: Summer 2009 [Hopefully. If the script isn't ready by then it may have to wait...]
Ideas so far:
General plot -There’s a zombie outbreak [origins pending]. The agents and scientists must determine the cause. Agents collect samples and work in the field to prevent further spreading. They’re the gun-toting, fighting, action characters, and they're usually immune to the virus. Scientists analyze the samples and try to determine a biological way to prevent further spreading, as well as track the spread patterns. They’re the brainy ones who basically give the agents the know-how to go out in the world without becoming zombie food. Counter-agents work for people who, for whatever reasons, want to continue and control the spread of the infection. They serve the same basic purpose as regular agents, but they’re bosses want opposite things, so agents and counter-agents try to kill each other. For some reason, the zombies don’t seem to attack females. That’s not to say females can’t be zombies, they can still contract the virus. But once a person is a zombie, they attack males [perhaps testosterone attracts them and estrogen repels them].
Focused plot - An immune woman becomes a test subject for a scientist, who wants to analyze her to determine not only what makes her immune, but why zombies seem to avoid females. She's assigned an agent [whom we'll call Agent Sigma for now] to protect her. Over time they become attracted to each other, adding the romantic angle. She becomes kidnapped by counter agents, and Agent Sigma and a small team of agents [Delta, Gamma, Theta] are sent to retrieve her. There's a lot of fighting, stuff goes down. I'll work on the ending and get back to you. I don't want to give it away for those who won't be a part of making it.
Scene examples:
The purpose for the zombies-only-attack-males plot device is to add the comedy element. The scientist and an agent are discussing how to get past a zombie horde. The scientist mentions the males-only attack pattern, and they both look thoughtful. The scene then cuts to a long fight sequence where the agent is wearing female clothing [a failed attempt to disguise himself as a female in the hopes the zombies wouldn’t notice him]. The scene then cuts back to the scientist, who is smirking, and the agent, who says “No.” Then they find a serious way to do it.
Later, the agent is running from a group of zombies in a parkour fashion, remarking about his terrible luck. The scientist then says, “Hey, at least you’re not wearing drag.” The scene then cuts to the same chase, only the agent is in the female clothing again, performing a few successful maneuvers before falling due to the clothing and being swarmed by zombies. The scene cuts back to the real chase and the agent says, “You make a fair point,” and continues running.
Other ideas:
Musical aspect - I thought it would be cool if a part of the film resembled a musical in some way. Cassie had the great idea of performing a song called "Can't Wait to Eat Brains" [think Lion King, "Can't Wait to Be King"]. Would anyone be willing to sing for a brief part of the movie? I'll work on writing up a parody of the song.
Characters and potential cast so far:
Director: Alec
Screenwriter: Alec
Cameras: Cortney, Tori [Cassie? Anyone who's not acting in a scene can hold a camera. I'm especially looking for people who actually own cameras. The more the better. Tripods too, if we can get them.]
Weapons:Jeremiah [We won't be using real guns of course. In fact, if we can't edit in sound effects or light effects, we may not use guns at all. Unless we just point and shout "BANG!" Which could be hilarious.]
Computer equipment: [Doesn't have to be functional. But we need a few monitors and maybe a laptop or two. Jason's home setup would make a great command/research center.]
Fight choreography: Alec, Cassie, Patrick [Can we contact Rob again? He was awesome, haha. If we can’t I’ll see what I can do. Anyone with martial arts experience can add to the choreography.]
Drivers:Tyler, maybe Conrad [I want to try and get a short driving sequence of some kind in the movie. It won't be anything very fast, because I'll be hanging out of the window when it happens.]
Editing: [Hopefully if Cassie isn’t too busy she’d like to work on it a bit. But if she is too busy, we’ll work something out.]
Music: Everyone. [When we start putting everything together, begin thinking about what kinds of music would suit particular scenes.]
Environments: Pink Hill Park, Jeremiah's house/forest, Jason's house [hopefully, if he doesn't mind], Kaycie's house [maybe], more locations pending.
Zombies: Anyone who doesn't already have a role. [Kaycie says she can provide some cheap clothing to make ragged for the zombies.]
Communications/technical specialist: Jason
Agent Sigma: Alec
Agent Delta: [Any takers?]
Agent Gamma: [Any takers?]
Agent Theta: [Any takers?]
Armorer: Jeremiah
Counter-agents: Conrad [Maybe a female counter-agent too. Any takers?]
Singer(s): [Will become a zombie at some point. Any takers? If nobody wants the role, it will be taken out of the script.]
Immune woman: Kaycie
Scientist:Tori [It would be great if we could get a lab coat. I might get one online. It would be less than $20. But if someone has one we can use, that would be good.]
More actors/actresses are needed. If you want to be one of the characters/crew members listed, or you have ideas for more characters, please let me know.
These are just a few ideas. I’ll have more soon, and I’ll probably update this note as the ideas develop. If I can, I might do a bit of filming while I'm at Truman. Feel free to put any ideas you guys have out there and we can discuss them. I want to make a film that’s fun for everyone. Comment if you’re interested.
