PostSubject: Chain Maille making workshops   Mon Aug 18, 2008 8:48 pm

if any one wants to learn how to make chain maille for armor or just decorations I am more then willing to teach them. I have all the tools and enough spare wire to cover several miles. I am proficient with a large amounts of weaves and ring cutting tricks and all that nice stuff. I can teach people how to make rivetted maile and all as well though if you have that kinda of spare time I kinda envy you for it Razz I am availible on mondays to run people through the basics. let me know if your interested. Once I get my shop cleaned out and set up all the way I am planning to start doing other workshops for various other armor and garb making things. Figured i would start out with maille armor since it doesn't take up a lot of space and I have more materials then I will ever need for it. Smile

Dude, count me in, I'm so interested in attempting this. It'll be BA for sure!
I have college in the mornings on Mondays, but I don't work any Mondays this month at the Library which is awesome.

Let me know when/where and I'll do my best to be there. ^_^

I will be aiming for the 25 of this month if i can get everything ready if not it will be for sure Sepmeber 1st. Some time in the evening is best. I wake up earlier on my days off so i am open for the entire day. Make sure to get a good pair of gloves so you dont leave your skin behind. Other than that I have everything else covered. Let me know what times are good for you guys and we can set it up then. I am wanting to make the monday night work shop thing a long term project for various crafting events. So figuring out what time is convient for people to get around work schedules is ideal.

Awesome i am glad people are interested. it sucks that i only have one night a week open for this. But I only have sundays and mondays off and sundays are pretty booked for me. going to try getting everything set up tommorrow after i wake up since i will have several hours depends on how long grocery shopping takes. For now let me know what kind of armor styles people are interested in. I will be starting with the european 4 in 1 style but there are a ton of other options and a lot of jewelery weaves that make great accents and are just fun to work with.

that be around the cost plus a bit for labor you figure a hide of cow that is armor/saddle grade goes for about that much. I am not sure how much leather that a suit of that type would take honestly. but the side of a cow is pretty big lol. So its not unreasonable at all. The main question is quality of product. Wheter its just leather. Hot water hardened leather(whis in my humble opinion is the most authentic means of leather hardening.) Or even wax hardened which just smells so nice if they use beeswax though it can melt in your trunk during the summer I have been told. Assuming that it takes 1/2 to 3/4 of a hide and the buckles and all the accessories it seems to be a pretty good deal. That type of armor retails for around 200-400 dollars depending on where you are getting it from.

Sigh so many years of Larping has made me know to much about things that normal people never think about lol.

So ask these questions
1. What grade of leather is he using.
2. How is the leather being treated or formed.
3. Ask for a picture of his previous work to see if you like the style and it appears to be good quality work.

Since armor is a pretty costly investment, just make sure your getting your moneys worth. Though I think the lorica look is pretty kick ass. I myself am thinking about making a lorica segmenta type arm protection. Though I haven't worked all that out yet. Have lots of chainmaille and scales to make for the breastplate I want to make before I worry about that one.

Luckily alot of people that make armor for a hobby are willing to do it for near cost since they one, like making it but dont want to do it for a living and two like getting people in armor so they can compete better and thee chosen battle game.

on that note if its good enough to pass the sca standard its good ernough to make a full powered swing from a bamboo stick not break you with padding so its plenty good to take a foam stick.

actually the type of armor you requested i don;t think i have seen any made exept by maybe the roman at dom(don't know wat his armor actually was) but yeah Jackson makes his own armor for SCA and has been doin it for a while, but i would still have raynne look at it, and Jackson would understand, you got to protect ur investments afro

Yeah i have no problem looking it over or talking to Jackson to help out. Like a said earlier a lot of people make really good armor as a hobby and its most often cheaper and better quality then the stuff you get from a business. Plus it has the added advantage of eing able to talk directly to the person making the item.

On that note I am good for monday this following week, I am aiming for 4 pm to whenever as the scheduled time. Let me know what times are good for you guys as i am free all afternoon. So Monday August 25th Chainmaille basics. Bring gloves to avoid painful blisters cause they suck and so does about a million little scratches on your hands. I will have a handout made up for tools that are needed for making the stuff if you want to get into making your own chain armor. After the first class I will keep adding on more techniques and stuff till we get to riveting mail. Cause that will have to wait till I get the anvil stand finished Smile So if any additional people are interested please let me know so i can scrounge up enough chairs for every one.
